Strike a Light, in partnership with Brighton & Hove Library and Information Service, and Fabrica showcases its WWI themed project The Orange Lilies – Brighton and Hove Soldiers in the Somme.
Frederick Geroge Stoner 1914The project focusses the city’s legacy of the Somme and a significant event on the eve of this (where huge numbers of Brighton soldiers fell), The Battle of Boar’s Head (also known as The Day that Sussex Died), as a key part of WWI, and its’ subsequent impact on Brighton and Hove.
Get involved with our new The Orange Lilies project which has just begun and which is researching and commemorating the role of Brighton and Hove born Royal Sussex Regiment soldiers in the battle of the Somme in 1916.
Heritage Lottery Fund awards £9,900 to The Orange Lilies Project at Strike a Light to mark First World War Centenary
Today, Strike a Light, in partnership with Brighton & Hove Library and Information Service, and Fabrica received £9,900 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for a project, The Orange Lilies – Brighton and Hove Soldiers in the Somme, in Brighton and Hove. Awarded through HLF’s First World War: then and now programme, the project will focus on the city’s legacy of the Somme and a significant event on the eve of this (where huge numbers of Brighton soldiers fell), The Battle of Boar’s Head (also known as The Day that Sussex Died), as a key part of WWI, and its’ subsequent impact on Brighton and Hove.

UPCOMING EVENTS – 2016
Our free Heritage Open Days events taking place in 2016 will be at Fabrica on Thursday 8th September from 1-4pm.
A WWI historic walking tour will also take place on Friday 9th September, which will be led by historian Dr Geoffrey Mead
We’re hosting a WWI themed Conversations Cafe with not one but two speakers this month!
The session takes place on Wednesday 13th April at Jubilee Library 2.30-4.30pm. Free to all.

Strike a Light is pleased to announce joining a new collaboration for Brighton Festival with lead companyNutkhut.
The ambitious, large-scale, immersive outdoor experience Dr Blighty recalls Brighton’s WWI wartime history, bringing the experiences of Indian soldiers – and the locals who came to care for them – movingly back to life via an immersive walk-through installation across the Royal Pavilion Estate.
We’re pleased to add the historian Douglas d’Enno to our Conversations Cafe event for Wednesday April 13th 2.30-4.30pm at Fabrica gallery in Brighton. The event is free and all are welcome. Refreshments will be provided.
Professor Albert Grundlingh (Stellenbosch University, South Africa) will be giving talks at the University of Brighton for Gateways to World War I project (3 February) and the University of Kent (4 February) exploring the ways in which the 1917 sinking of the SS Mendi, carrying a detachment of the South African Native Labour Contingent, has been remembered.
