Room booking – Special rates available!

Strike a Light – Arts & Heritage has a special  affordable for room bookings for our central Brighton studio for charities and small organisations in the community sector.
Our booking rate is only £7.50 per hour, so make some savings whilst you can!
Strike a Light – Arts & Heritage has affordable space available to rent in its’ Brighton’s Open Market based studio (mezzanine level) between 9-6pm weekdays and weekends throughout the year.
If you’d like a cosy, central Brighton space to try out a new workshop activity, run training sessions, access hot desk space space, or to run a regular creative session for up to ten people each time (that’s our limit due to room size), then get in touch!

Reminiscence for West Sussex

Training

We’re starting the first of day days of training in West Sussex this week to deliver bespoke reminiscence training to staff and volunteers in the West Sussex County Council Libraries Service in Worthing, Bognor, Crawley and Horsham amongst others between March and May 2019.

Strike a Light at Legacies of First World War Conference – This weekend

Our creative director Nicola Benge is pleased to be speaking at the Legacies of the First World War Festival in Birmingham this weekend.
She will be looking at some of the projects Strike a Light have worked on over the past four years with a special focus on those which explore the black and minority ethnic contributions to the war. 
These projects include Dr Blighty, Trench Brothers and The Unremembered.
 
This two day community history conference is free to attend and has the noted historian David Olusoga as keynote speaker on the first day.
 
Come and experience some great histories and legacies of WWI.
You can book for any or all of the events including both conference days, and the evening event. Come join us!
 
Voices of War and Peace: the Great War and its Legacy is a First World War Engagement Centre funded by the Arts & Humanities Research Council and in partnership with the Heritage Lottery Fund.
The University of Birmingham Centre is a joint initiative across the Midlands with Birmingham City University, University of Wolverhampton and University of Worcester, and further afield with Cardiff University, University of Durham, Manchester Metropolitan University and Newcastle University.
The Engagement Centre is based in the Library of Birmingham and supports a wide range of community engagement activities, connecting academic and public histories of the First World War as part of the commemoration of the War’s centenary.

Reminiscence West Sussex starts this week

Strike a Light – Arts & Heritage starts its bespoke reminiscence training this Thursday to staff and volunteers at West Sussex County Council Library Services.

We will be delivering five training days at different libraries for the West Sussex Libraries Service between March and May 2019.

Rise & View Krew

Strike a Light – Arts & Heritage has been awarded funding to set up a new group and to deliver holiday club activities with young residents of the Saunders Park area of Brighton.

The group is called Rise & View Krew after the names of the local streets – Saunders Park View and Saunders Park Rise and will be free and open to accompanied children ages 5-11.

Activities are free, and for residents of Saunders Park.

The sessions will take place during the Easter holidays and summer holidays in April and August 2019.

We will have ten three hour sessions offering a variety of creative activities along with a healthy snack.

We will encourage young participants to try new pursuits and acquire new skills, whilst meeting friends and accessing dedicated facilitation from staff and freelancers at Strike a Light to support this.

Silver Foxes reminiscence group

Silver Foxes projectOur reminiscence group Silver Foxes (aimed at older people)continues and welcomes new participants.

The group will be based at Brooke Mead Sheltered Housing Scheme in Brighton  but is open to anyone over 60 years of age.

The group meets on Tuesdays every week from 11-12pm.
We will be exploring life memories, local history, trying new activities including boccia, table tennis and chair yoga to encourage participants to try new things, improve their memories and meet new people – oh and tea and biscuits of course!

We’d like to thank our funders for supporting this who are the Healthy Neighbourhood Fund through the Trust for Developing Community, and The Boost Charitable Trust. Thanks to both of these for helping to make this happen, and to Brighton and Hove City Council for in-kind support including the venue.

Strike a Light was mentioned in a recent edition of care home Hyman Fine House in-house magazine about our Mazel Tov Brighton project.

The project celebrated links between Judaism and Brighton and Hove lives with residents of the Jewish Care charity run home Hyman Fine House. You can read the full magazine here!
