Oral History Volunteers wanted!

Oral History Volunteers wanted!
Would you like to learn how to record memories of the Royal Sussex County Hospital (BSUH) ?
Want to contribute them to the final phase of a heritage project?
The historic Royal Sussex County Hospital is undergoing a massive redevelopment to provide top of the range, 21st century healthcare facilities for the people of Brighton & Hove and Sussex. For this to happen, many of the old buildings need to be replaced.
This project will collect memories and stories about the hospital, to capture its heritage and share the role it has played in the lives of Brighton & Hove residents, including staff, patients and the wider community.
We are seeking enthusiastic volunteers to get involved, who would like to record oral histories with hospital staff, patients, and visitors between until March 2020. We will provide training and support with experienced facilitators and project manager.
The oral history training takes place on 30-31st July in Brighton.
These oral histories will feed into an exhibition taking place in September 2019 at Jubilee Library and also feed into a new archive to share these memories and experiences in March 2020.
There will also be opportunities for further free training and activities over the next seven months with reminiscence training and object handling training in 2019.
If you’d like to get involved, please email us at: strikealight@rocketmail.com

Silver Foxes

Silver Foxes

Strike a Light – Arts & Heritage continues with our group aimed at older people called Silver Foxes. The group is based at Brooke Mead Sheltered Housing Scheme in Brighton  but open to anyone city wide over 60 years of age.

The group meets every Tuesday each week from 11-12pm.

We are exploring life memories, local history, trying new activities including bocca, table tennis and chair yoga to encourage participants to try new things, improve their memories and meet new people – oh and tea and biscuits of course!

We’d like to thank our funders for supporting this who are:

Homity TrustHealthy Neighbourhood Fund through the Trust for Developing Community, and The Boost Charitable Trust.

Thanks to all of these for helping to make this happen, and to Brighton and Hove City Council for in-kind support with the the venue.

Shalom Sussex project website

Strike a Light – Arts & Heritage has set up a new project website to support the Shalom Sussex – The Jewish Community in WWI to profile the contribution Jewish people in Sussex made during the First World War – both on the home-front and abroad on the battlefield.

Jewish people make up a small part of the Sussex demographic, and with partners and participants we have realised how little information is available about this topic. We seek to research, explore and share this hidden history.
