We are really pleased that Strike a Light – Arts & Heritage has been awarded funding to set up a new group and to deliver holiday club activities with young residents of the Saunders Park area of Brighton.
The group will be call the Rise & View Krew after the names of the local streets – Saunders Park View and Saunders Park Rise and will be free and open to accompanied children ages 5-11.
The sessions will take place during the Easter holidays and summer holidays in April and August 2019. We aim for there to be ten three hour sessions offering a variety of creative activities along with a health snack.
Activities will include the following:
Calico print making and flags
Faux stained glass
We will encourage young participants to try new pursuits and acquire new skills, whilst meeting friends and accessing dedicated facilitation from staff and freelancers at Strike a Light to support this.
There are currently no other groups for children in Saunders Park, and we would like to encourage a group to start and grow (to publicise activities and also to create more in-kind support with parental help).
We aim to show that even with limited time and funds; it is still achievable to set up a group offering educational, nurturing, sustainable and enjoyable activities whilst factoring in healthy eating, cooperative play, sharing, and healthy living. This is in addition to supporting families and especially isolated mums.
We have in-kind support from Trust for Developing Communities- Hollingdean and Saunders Park who are committed to providing a free space to develop activities for children and families in the area at the United Reform Church on the corner of Lewes Road and Saunders Park Rise, as the only venue in the area to deliver sessions.
This group development we believe encourages more families to join in community activities. We will do this through the development of inclusive and participatory activities and events for children.
This will include a programme of sessions which incorporate learning age appropriate new skills such as print making, stained glass, clay sessions. These sessions will incorporate numeracy and literacy to support learning.
Strike a Light will be running a free drop in creative activity at East Brighton Trust‘s Community Grants Drop in next month. Come along and find out about sourcing funds for activities and amuse your kids at the same time!
The event will be held on Tuesday 24th April from2-6pm at The Bevyand will be a chance for East Brighton community groups and good causes to get FREE advice and support on funding and resources that might help them along.
