And Now: Are looking for a large number of volunteers to take part in the finale installation event for Brighton Festival. Ideally the volunteers would have some dance, movement, performance experience but this is not essential. The participants must be 16 or over. The event is a large scale fire installation with choreographed performed punctuations taking place on the beach near the West Pier.
Rehearsals:
• 4pm – 7pm Sun 17th May in the Corn Exchange, Brighton Dome – workshop for group leaders and volunteer participants in early May
• Saturday 23rd May afternoon and all evening on the beach rehearsals
• Sunday 24th May afternoon rehearsals then the “show’ in the evening on the beach
Date of Performance: Evening of 24th May
• Volunteer participants would need to commit to attending the rehearsals and being there for the ‘show‘
Activity:
The performance elements will be simple and carried out in a ‘follow the leader’ type way. It may involve carrying and manipulating a simple prop. It is outside so performers must be willing to work in all weather, and be physically fit as there will be movement on shingle. It will involve moving as an ensemble, a chorus on the shingle beach, up and down the banks and along paths created within the installation. It may involve making some noise, spoken word, a chatter or murmur rather than clearly spoken narrative. Please note that the performance takes place at outdoors and at night which can be physically demanding.

Fleeting: A one-off festival commission
Ever witnessed a murmuration of starlings over the West Pier? Shape-shifting without borders or boundaries as thousands of chattering individuals move as one? Like the precarious pier that’s gradually being reclaimed by the sea, it’s a magnificent expression of the impermanence of our world. Fleeting is a punctuated installation on the beach created by And Now: who specialise in creating unexpected visual experiences. And Now often use fire to connect with people, drawing on its universal cultural presence, symbolic strength and power to focus and inspire. As daylight fades, hundreds of individual points of fire are lit to create swathes of glowing light. Move closer; is that the sound of erosion, of rusting perhaps? Or maybe this is what progression sounds like? Is it the sound of birds in flight, or of time passing? Is it the sound of the shifting, ever-changing population, maybe you can hear memories of migration? Evoking a sense of calm and contemplation, Fleeting is at once a tribute to the West Pier, the people of Brighton and Hove and the transforming power of nature – a fitting finale to Brighton Festival 2015.

Periplum: Are looking for 12 local volunteer performers plus 2 volunteer assistants to help assist the pyrotechnicians during the performance (No previous pyrotechnic experience is required and full training will be given) who can be community members and/or student performers of 18 years old and above.
Rehearsals:
Friday 15th May
6pm -Volunteers arrive on site
10pm – Tech dress rehearsal
11.15pm – Vols leave site

5pm -Vols arrive on site
10pm-10:45 Show
11.15pm Vols leave site
Activity: Periplum trains the volunteers into the performance/steward role through an on-site briefing and rehearsals.
It is vital that all the volunteers attend the dress rehearsal the night before the first performance in order to learn their role and carry it out safely. All volunteers should wear appropriate footwear and dark trousers made of natural fibres.

Inspired by Ray Bradbury’s visionary novel Fahrenheit 451, this incendiary outdoor performance recounts the story of a society in which books are banned and firemen are employed to burn them. Bradbury’s classic text has proven prophetic, reflected in the rise of the ipad, surveillance, interactive media, the televised pursuit of fugitives, and the continuing radical power of the written word.
451 combines immersive sound and sensory theatre to depict a dystopic society where literature is outlawed and acts of violence are rewarded. As we witness a rise in monitoring and attacks on freedom of expression we might even believe that there could be a future where books may once again hold a secret knowledge…

Burn the Curtain: Are looking for a 1 stage manager assistant 16 years +
Rehearsals: Afternoons and evening (times TBC) Tues 5th – Thurs 7th May
Date of Performances: 6pm – 11pm 7th – 9th May
Activity: Assist the company stage manager to deliver site, prop and costume tasks. This is an exciting opportunity to get hands on experience with a site specific outdoor show. Please note that the performance takes place at outdoors and at night which can be physically demanding. Working on shows of this nature and role can demanding, challenging yet very rewarding. There will be lifting/shifting/guarding etc so must be physically capable. What the festival brochure says about the event:

A promenade theatre adventure for walkers and runners. ‘One beast, and only one, howls in the woods at night.’
A young girl puts on her red cloak and heads into the forest, watched by unseen eyes. She begins to run, and so the hunt begins. Run or walk with us, and help to sniff out those who are hairy on the inside…
Burn the Curtain (The Adventures of Don Quixote by Bicycle, Brighton Festival 2013) turns Angela Carter’s macabre imagination into a spine-tingling outdoor experience. The tale unfolds as you progress along the route, which will be between two and five miles long, depending on which path you take. You can choose to be fleet of foot or eagle-eyed; to pick up the pace or tread carefully. But stray from the path for one instant, and the wolves will eat you. Choose to be a Runner or a Walker and remember that some of the action will take place in the dark, so please bring a torch or head torch. Please wear suitable footwear and dress appropriately for the weather. Please note this event is not wheelchair accessible.
