Strike a Light – Arts and Heritage sends you festive greetings.

A Happy New Year in 2017!

2016 has been a bumper year for us with new projects, a studio move and organisational changes too!
A look back over 2016 …

The Boys on the Plaque
Our ongoing partnership with Fabrica Gallery on The Boys on the Plaque project has continued with a year of free Conversation Cafes, outings, talks and a Heritage Open Days event.
We’ve enjoyed every minute of it, and met some lovely people at our events – Thanks to all who’ve come along, watched films, sang and made each occasion special!
Next year, we’ll be creating a booklet about the project for Fabrica which will be coming out in June 2017 and will go out to local schools and organisations.
Find out more about the project here.

The Orange Lilies
We oversaw the successful start of The Orange Lilies – Brighton & Hove in the Somme project, funded by The Heritage Lottery Fund.
We now have 22 volunteer researchers looking at the theme of Brighton and Hove in the Somme alongside exploring the role of the Royal Sussex Regiments during 1916. We have also engaged five young film makers who are creating short films about WWI in Brighton.
This project runs until July 2017, and we have free events and activities taking place throughout the rest of the project.
If you’d like to take part, or come along to an event, visit our project site for further information.

Dancing with Dementia
We’ve just begun a pilot project Dancing with Dementia in collaboration with the charity Jewish Care at a centre in Brighton, encouraging older residents with dementia to stay active, using music to trigger memories.
Our first event brought students from Brighton music college Access to Music to play songs to residents and encouraged them to join in with singing. Next year brings workshops with dancers and teachers, as well as performances to join in with.
Thanks to the Healthy Collaboration fund through Trust for Developing Communities for this support.

Dr Blighty
We were pleased to deliver creative activities on behalf of the company Nukhut as part of the celebrated Dr Blighty project exploring Indian soldiers in Brighton & Hove during WWI this winter.
To date we’ve led 54 workshops with young people in a variety of schools, venues and events in November and December. Phew!
In 2017 we’ll be creating an education pack based on these activities which will go out free to all local city schools for use in perpetuity.

We’re excited to say that Creative Director of Strike a Light – Arts & Heritage (Nicola Benge) attended a lunch to receive a Community Service Award for her work, given by the Rotary Club of Brighton & Hove this month, a nice way to round up the year.
