Are you passionate about books and reading?

Would you like to help make a difference to people’s lives through reading
and sharing books? And at the same time learn new skills and develop your
own talents?

Would you like to facilitate a Read Aloud Group and become a Reading
Champion?

Collected Works CIC and West Sussex Libraries are offering a free Read
Aloud taster training workshop for up to 20 people in the Adur area. This
training is offered to anyone interested in volunteering to facilitate a
Read Aloud group in Southwick or Lancing libraries OR those who would like
to learn a bit more about running Read Aloud groups in the community.

What is a Read Aloud Group?
A Read Aloud group is a weekly reading group in which good quality short
stories, poems and novels are read together aloud by members of the group
and the group facilitators, each taking it in turn to read a paragraph or
chunk of text. Collected Works run Read Aloud groups across Brighton and
are now planning to set up groups in Southwick and Lancing libraries.

During the workshop you will:
Discuss what qualities make a good Reading Champion
Meet a volunteer Reading Champion who already runs a group
Talk about books and why you love reading
Hear about the Read Aloud groups Collected Works are working with this
year
Practice reading aloud in a supportive environment
Share a poem that means something to you

Skills needed:
Good communication skills
Happy reading aloud to groups
Confidence and a sensitivity to other people’s individual needs
