Brighton Hospital – (3Ts Oral History project)

Strike a Light – Arts & Heritage is pleased to be delivering the heritage and oral history provision of this BSUH heritage project through Nimbus in Brighton in 2019 and 2020.

Oral History Volunteers wanted!

Would you like to learn how to record memories of the Royal Sussex County Hospital (BSUH)?

Want to contribute them to the final phase of a heritage project?

The historic Royal Sussex County Hospital is undergoing a massive redevelopment to provide top of the range, 21st century healthcare facilities for the people of Brighton & Hove and Sussex. For this to happen, many of the old buildings need to be replaced.

This project will collect memories and stories about the hospital, to capture its heritage and share the role it has played in the lives of Brighton & Hove residents, including staff, patients and the wider community.

We are seeking enthusiastic volunteers to get involved, who would like to record oral histories with hospital staff, patients, and visitors between until March 2020. We will provide training and support with experienced facilitators and project manager.

The oral history training takes place on 30-31st July in Brighton.

These oral histories will feed into an exhibition taking place in September 2019 at Jubilee Library and also feed into a new archive to share these memories and experiences in March 2020.

There will also be opportunities for further free training and activities over the next seven months with reminiscence training and object handling training in 2019.

Can anyone express interest in volunteering?

Yes, anyone can express interest. If selected, as part of the on boarding process, to ensure both patient and volunteer safety onsite all volunteers must undergo a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check and submit a health questionnaire and be cleared.

Please note that as a general rule, places are initially prioritised for local persons (East Sussex) as this is a Local History project.

Do I need prior experience in Heritage to volunteer?

No work-place or prior volunteering experience in Heritage is essential; this is as training will be provided. We welcome applications from all interested persons. We are however looking for soft skills, such as clear communication skills, attention
to detail and the ability to briefly summarise information.

What are you researching?

The main themes of the research activities cover the:
– Organisational History of ‘The Royal Sussex County Hospital’
– Social History: The culture and memories of the current and prior workforce, patients and visitors
– Contextual History: How Brighton and Medicine has changed, and the affect and influence of the Hospital on this

Alongside this it is looking at:

– Material history: Objects, Photographs, Equipment, Uniforms (etc.) that interpret the history of the Hospital and People.
– Built history: The buildings, past and present of the Hospital

What sort of research will volunteers be involved in?

During the development phase the Heritage Officer identified Archival and Hospital based research documents, books and photographs of interest to further research.

Volunteer support will assist in reviewing these materials by creating summaries to go into the Initial research plan, and assisting with documenting images, names and object information. In some cases, they may be asked to assist in searching for contextual information relating to oral history stories.

I have an object/photograph/document associated with the site that may be of interest. Would you like it?

We would love to receive photos of artefacts you own relating to the site, or drop in for a chat. If after seeing the artefact, we believe it is of high heritage importance, and you wish to donate it to the local community, we may connect you with our project partners whom do collect. We would ask you for permission before doing so.

We kindly ask persons not to present artefacts at Hospital receptions as we cannot guarantee their safety, and are unable to pass them on to partners without paperwork signed by the donor.

If you have any queries about any of the above, please do contact us.
