Strike a Light has confirmed that it will be curating an event at Fabrica gallery on Thursday 6th September 11-4pm on the theme of Rituals as part of the national Heritage Open Days events which are open to all, and free!

We are really excited about the event which will feature amongst others:

A series of events celebrating the role of ritual in our lives through a contemporary slide reel of memory and family rituals, a dance event, a talk, an Armchair Critics event, and a drop-in workshops with two artists - Jane Fordham, and Clare Nias.

Historian Sarah Tobias will also be giving an interactive talk about Victorian Death & Mourning, apt given that Fabrica is based in an old church!

And Catherine Tajima Powell will be exhibiting her ‘Traces’ work for the event. All washed down with free tea and biscuits! Now there’s a ritual!

Fabrica is a visual arts organisation based in a former Regency church in the heart of Brighton that commissions contemporary visual art installations specific to the building. There is capacity for 150 persons.

Thursday 14 June, 11-4pm

A free drop in event at Fabrica, celebrating the them of laughter. An exploration of the joys that bind, shared laughter and experience through generations which work across the age divide. Creative workshops, exhibition, talks and free cafe. Aimed at the whole community, especially older people, visitors are invited to encounter art in a relaxed and exciting way.

In collaboration with Strike a Light. In conjunction with Cinecity.

Film screening The Artist

Thursday 14 June, 6-8.30pm

A cosy evening showing of The Artist with cushions, wine, nibbles and cocoa – all for £1.

A homage to the silent era of movie, The Artist is a black and white (mostly) silent film. Jean Dujardin stars as George Valentin a world famous silent movie star, who’s life takes a dramatic turn with the onset of talking pictures. Co-starring Bérénice Bejo as Peppy Miller a young talented dancer.

Studio space for rent

Studio sublet this July and August based in Trafalgar Studios, Level 8 South in New England House. It is a shared studio space with 8 people, broken in different sized partitions. My space has a desk with office area, and a large making table with shelving storage. It is £135 pcm (including electricity and broadband) and is available from July 1st until 1st September.

It is a light bright south facing space sharing with lovely creative folk – painting, working with textiles and upholstery and is sociable. There is an area for making tea and a fridge and microwave.

Laughter Lines at Fabrica

Laughter is the shortest distance between the generations.

Strike a Light is curating a free event day at Fabrica gallery (www.fabrica.org.uk) on Thursday 14th June from 11-4pm with a showing of recent Oscar winning film The Artist from 6-8.30pm following this at the bargain price of £1!

This event will be along the theme of laughter - ’An exploration of the joys that bind, shared laughter and experience through generations which work across the age divide…’

The event is aimed at all, but older people and groups are especially welcome. Seating and a cafe area with free refreshments is available throughout the day, to relax, rest and enjoy the activities, exhibition and short films.

Laughter Lines

Strike a Light is curating a new and free event at Fabrica gallery on Thursday 14th June called Laughter Lines. ‘An exploration of the joys that bind, shared laughter and experience through generations which work across the age divide…’

The idea to use Laughter as a theme came from a quote I heard on Radio 4 in December ‘ Laughter is the shortest distance between the generations’. Although the quote is actually from from the comedian Victor Borge and is ‘Laughter is the shortest distance between two people’.

It will take place from 11-4pm and will include artist’ workshops facilitated byJane Fordham and Clare Nias as well as an Armchair Critics event hosted by Lorenza Ippolito, a cafe, a display by Cecile Chevalier about reminiscecence and digital media.

We hope to follow this with a film collaboration with Cine City from 6-8.30pm where we will create a cosy space in the gallery with bean bags, cocoa, wine and nibbles. All welcome!

Laughter – Fabrica

Strike a Light is curating an event at Fabrica gallery on Thursday 14th June along the theme of laughter – ‘Laughter is the shortest distance between two people’. An exploration of the joys that bind, shared laughter and experience through generations which work across the age divide..

The free event will comprise a series of workshop activities with artists, exhibitions, and a cafe between 11am-4pm, as well as a film showing from 6-8pm for £1 on the same date. Reminiscence

Strike a Light will be running a reminiscence activity for Dementia sufferers on Thursday 1st March, alongside willing 75 year old volunteer Rod Patterson. We will be using a memory box, postcards and ‘memory triggers’ to create a comfortable and safe space for the residential care residents to explore their heritage and life experiences.

Community History Making

Strike a Light will be staffing a stall for Queenspark Books for the Community History Making lecture at the University of Brighton, Grand Parade, Brighton. Stella Cardus from Queenspark Books will be making a presentation about the organisation’s history.

The event is free and open to all. 5.30-7.30pm Wednesday 22nd February 2012

Hope Springs Eternal re-visited

The 15 minute film ‘Hope Springs Eternal’ which Strike a Light created in collaboration with filmmaker Si Mitchell in October 2011 continues to receive positive responses. It was shown at White Night 2011 in Brighton as part of a wider event organised by Strike a Light also called ‘Hope Springs Eternal’, and again in December at Fabrica gallery as part of the ‘Relativity’ event.

‘Taking part in the ‘Hope Springs Eternal’ film was an interesting experience. I so hope that such a film will help to inspire similar events’.
