Ale exhibition at Lewes Library

On Friday 12th and Saturday 13th August 9.30-5pm, Lewes Library will host an exciting, free event aimed at celebrating the heritage of ale,  brewing and related agricultural industries in Lewes.  The two day exhibition will display photographic memories and tales, from a time when Lewes laid claim to nine local breweries, to unearth the hidden history of one of the main industries of the town in the last 300 years.

The exhibition which will also draw on materials from East Sussex Records Office and support from Harveys Brewery, aims to encourage visitors to contribute their memories to help build up archive material from the past. We encourage visitors to leave memories of local brewing, ale, and agricultural and brewery working life.

Bring along photos and documents to be scanned and added to the exhibition!A selection pack of ale from Harveys Brewery is a prize for one lucky person who will have their Lewes brewing memories contribution plucked from a hat!

The exhibition is organised in conjunction with the arts and heritage organisation Strike a Light. To find out more about this event, please contact Nicola Benge strikealight@rocketmail.com http://www.strikealight.org
Lewes Library is fully accessible.

Hope prevails

Strike a Light has been getting more involved in our project about Hope and growing older with the Memories Past group and groups across Brighton and Hove. We hope to finish filming in July so that we can all start preparing for our film launch at White Night on Saturday 29th October. Groups have been filmed at the bandstand in Brighton, at Fabrica gallery, at Pavilion Gardens and at the Mass Observation archive at Sussex University and it has been a busy, enthsiastic time for all.

Hope update

The Hope project (funded by the Active at 60 grant from Sussex Community Foundation) looking at the positive aspects of ageing in a short film, is going well.

We have been filming groups and individuals around Brighton and Hove over the last 6 weeks and getting their views on life, the universe and everything. There have been lots of lovely comments about ageing – there are some benefits, ‘unprotected sex!’ as well as great excuses to get folks together and celebrate life through dance, music and film.

Filmmaker Si Mtichell is working with Strike a Light to make a short film for Brighton’s White Night showing on Saturday 29th October 2011 at Fabrica gallery in Brighton – come along!
